India's one of the most ancient festival is HOLI. This is known as different name. But everywhere there is a different explanation and history behind it,. In different era it's name has been changed. But the basic joy and theme is almost remains same. And it is accepted by all the Indian through out the periods from heart and soul. Here I will give some references .

IN BENGAL it is DOLJATRA. There is PHULODOL also. tThis was started from the time

 of SRI KRISHNA. 
And SRI CHAITANYA DEV AND THE OTHER VAISNAVA still are following that.

But why it is in Phalgun and why with Phag/ abir ? 

To search this question first we have to know Phag has come from Phalgu.

phalgu is  RED. AND RED POWDER FROM WILD GINGER.










Notice the last meaning RED POWDER OF WILD GINGER.
This colour and substance probably used in the ancient time which has many medicinal value.
